What Is Max? Everything You Need to Know About HBO’s New Streaming Service

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Warner Bros. launched its streaming service redesign going from the well-known HBO Max to a lone Max on Tuesday (May 23). The streamer was announced after Warner Bros. (the parent company of HBO) merged with Discovery last year. News of the name change had been known for months now, but since its officially here, this is what it means for new and current subscribers.

First, the library of options is about to grow exponentially — like more than double what HBO Max offered previously. While HBO Max offered a wide-range of original shows, movies and more, Max will have that and hundreds of episodes of Discovery+ shows. That doesn’t even include the number of new releases it plans on rolling out over the coming months — including The Weekend’s new show The Idol, which has already received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. So, it’s safe to say we’ll be busy bingeing for awhile.

What does that mean for current subscribers? Don’t worry, if you were subscribed to HBO Max before its redesign, you won’t have to pay for a new subscription. According to the site, all current subscribers have to do is open the app, sign-in and enjoy Max (if you already have the HBO Max app it will automatically redirect to Max where you’ll be prompted to log-in).

And, if you get HBO with your TV provider, internet service or wireless plan you should still have access to Max just double check with your provider or refer to Max’s list of providers.

For those who wish to watch everything from HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, Max originals, the DC universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the Food Network, HGTV and more, subscribe to Max for $9.99/month.

Currently, plans start at $9.99/month or $99.99/year to stream with ads and $15.99/month for ad-free streaming. One of the newest additions to the Max tiered plan is the ultimate ad-free plan that’s $19.99/month and comes with 4k quality, 100 free downloads and the ability to stream on four devices at once.

If you don’t already have Max in your cable plan, there may be a few ways to try it for free before committing such as through Hulu, DirectTV Stream, Prime Video and Verizon.
