Netflix's upcoming animated movie The Monkey King is an adaptation of the first few chapters of Wu Cheng’en’s 16th-century novel Journey to the West, following an iconic character from Chinese mythology: Sun Wukong (popularly known as Monkey King and voiced here by Jimmy O. Yang). While the fresh take is beholden to the classic folk tale in many ways, it incorporates new elements such as anthropomorphizing Monkey's magical stick and introducing a young human named Lin (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) as part of the adventure.
