While The Conners eventually worked out what to do with Jackie after killing off Roseanne, the show’s weakest Christmas episode proves the spinoff initially didn’t know how to use her. Laurie Metcalf earned critical praise for her role as Jackie Harris during Roseanne’s original run, with some reviewers even suggesting that her character was funnier than Roseanne herself. The perpetually unlucky, laughably neurotic Jackie should have been an irritating figure, but Metcalf’s Emmy-award-winning portrayal of the character managed to grant depth and humanity to Roseanne’s shrill, painfully high-strung sister. However, her role in The Conners didn’t always live up to Metcalf’s performance.
