A new Superman movie has been officially announced, as part of a refreshed slate of DC Universe films and TV shows under the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The headliner of the new DCU is a film called Superman Legacy, and it’s being written by Gunn.
Variety reports Superman Legacy is coming on July 11, 2025. It will help establish the new DCU, but it won’t be a Superman origin story. Instead, Safran says, it will focus on Superman “balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” He also noted that the spirit of the film will be optimistic, saying that Superman is “kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”
Right now Gunn is only attached to write, but Safran says he hopes Gunn “can be persuaded” to direct as well. (Gunn was next to Safran for this comment, but did not comment further.)
