Carell got his start in the 1980s when he was part of a student-run improvisational comedy troupe while attending Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He then got noticed when he performed with the Second City and got his first movie role in the comedy film Curly Sue. He also got some TV work at the time by appearing on The Dana Carvey Show in 1996.
