When The Dark Knight was released in 2008, audiences and critics were blown away by the film and were subsequently shocked when it was not nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The backlash led to the Oscars expanding the Best Picture category from 5 nominees to 10 nominees, however, big blockbuster films are still rarely nominated for Best Picture. The only comic book film to be nominated for Best Picture to date is Black Panther, despite others like Wonder Woman, Logan, or Avengers: Infinity War being just as worthy of the nomination.
