Opera Singer Esteban Baltazar Arrested in Mexico for Alleged Sexual Abuse

Mexican opera singer Esteban Baltazar, who has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Italy, was arrested over the weekend by agents of the capital’s Attorney General’s Office at the Mexico City International Airport, accused of sexual abuse by his former romantic partner, the agency revealed on Monday (Nov. 18) on its X account.

Identified by the authorities as Esteban “N”, the capital’s Prosecutor’s Office said in an information card that, according to evidence data provided by the Public Ministry, it “obtained preventive detention against a man for his probable participation in the crime of rape, occurred in December 2023, in the Benito Juárez mayor’s office.” The arrest took place on Saturday (Nov. 16).

Mexican authorities indicated that the singer will remain in the custody of the Prosecutor’s Office until his legal situation is defined in the coming days.

Billboard Español has requested information to the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, including if the accused has legal representation, with no response at press time.

On his social media, Baltazar, a 32 years old and originally from Jalisco, says he is the founder of a company called 3TM Entertainment, dedicated to “elevating the art of opera.” As a baritone he has performed on international stages in Italy and Spain, according to photographs shared by himself on Instagram. He also identifies himself as an actor.

According to the website Mexico Opera Studio, Baltazar has participated in over 30 theater productions. In 2019 he made his debut at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in the role of Haly in Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri, said the site. His credits also include Schaunard in La Bohème, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Sciarrone in Tosca, Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro, and others.
