Just a few months after picking up her seventh competitive MTV Video Music Award (best hip-hop for “Super Freaky Girl”), Nicki Minaj has added yet another music video-related accolade to her collection. On Oct. 26, Minaj’s “Super Bass” officially crossed one billion views on YouTube.
“Super Bass” served as the fifth single from Minaj’s blockbuster 2010 debut studio album Pink Friday. Eventually peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Super Bass” became the rapper’s first unaccompanied visit to the ranking’s top 10. In recent years, “Super Bass” has appeared on several Billboard staff lists, including The 100 Best Karaoke Songs of All Time (No. 7) and The 500 Best Pop Songs That Appeared on the Hot 100 (No. 13). The song’s music video also earned Minaj her first of five best hip-hop Moonpeople at the VMAs, the most victories of any artist in that category.
Minaj — who is a finalist for top rap female artist at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards — is currently prepping Pink Friday 2, a sequel to the 2010 original that will serve as her highly anticipated fifth studio album. In the lead-up to the record, Minaj has unleashed several new songs, including the historic Hot 100 chart-topper “Super Freaky Girl,” as well as the top 40 hits “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” (No. 13) and “Last Time I Saw You” (No. 23). In addition, the “Anaconda” rapper also teased a still-unreleased track titled “Big Difference” during one of her two performances at this year’s VMAs ceremony (Sept. 12).
After several previously announced release dates, Minaj appears to have settled on Dec. 8 — her birthday — as the new street date for the forthcoming record. In an effort to make up for the delays, Minaj has treated fans to several “Pink Friday” surprises, including alternate album covers, a freestyle over Drake & Chief Keef’s “All the Parties,” and a scrapped album cut called “Bahm Bahm.”
With “Super Bass” crossing one billion views, Minaj now boasts a total of nine music videos that have reached the milestone. Moreover, she is now the first female rapper to have two solo music videos with over one billion views each, the other being 2014’s Grammy-nominated “Anaconda.”
