Naruto set up the protagonist for a potential sequel long before Shippuden and Boruto came around, but the mistreatment of this character ruined any chance of this ever happening. The backbone of this otherwise unpopular character is so powerful, in fact, that he could have easily become the hero in a potential third series if Naruto and Boruto hadn't failed him later on. This mishandling is quite evident just because no fan would ever suspect that Konohamaru Sarutobi could have such a massive impact on both Naruto and Boruto, but he does.
