Motion Picture Academy Invites 398 New Members, Including The Weeknd, David Byrne & Taylor Swift: Full List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 398 artists and executives, including The Weeknd, David Byrne, Taylor Swift, Austin Butler, Keke Palmer, Bill Hader and Paul Reiser.

Membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity remaining a priority. According to the Academy, of the 2023 class, 40% identify as women, 34% belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities and 52% are from 50 countries and territories outside the U.S.

There are 76 Oscar nominees, including 22 winners, among the invitees.

As it has before, the Academy notes: “Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2023.” This is seen as a way for the Academy to keep a firm hand on the demographic diversification in its membership it is striving to achieve.

The Recording Academy last week announced an even more aggressive outreach to diversify and freshen its membership. It extended invitations to more than 2,800 new voting members and to more than 850 professional (non-voting) members. But, unlike the motion picture academy, the Recording Academy didn’t make the names of the invitees public. And it won’t share demographic details until later this summer, when it will report on those who accepted membership.

Eight individuals have been invited to join the motion picture academy by multiple branches. They include Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who won three Oscars earlier this year as producers, writers and directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once. They were invited to join by both the directors and producers branches.

The other dual honorees were all invited by both the directors and writers branches. They are: Colm Bairéad (The Quiet Girl, Finding the Footprints: A Look Back at Mise Éire); Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front, Jack); Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time, Simon Killer); Lukas Dhont (Close, Girl); Ana Katz (The Dog Who Wouldn’t be Quiet, Florianópolis Dream); and Santiago Mitre (Argentina, 1985, Paulina). These eight individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership.

“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement. “They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”

Here’s a complete list of the 2023 invitees, listed by the 19 branches that extended the invitations. The credits shown are supplied by the Academy.
