Hayao Miyazaki’s final movie, The Boy and the Heron has finally been released, and it’s managed to break the box office despite the lack of advertising. In what many considered to be a surprising move, a month before The Boy and the Heron’s release, Studio Ghibli’s Toshio Suzuki revealed that they would not be releasing trailers or any other sort of marketing in the lead-up to the premiere. The rationale was that people wouldn’t need to see trailers if they really wanted to see it, but it still came off as a bizarre marketing tactic that could very easily hurt the movie’s chances of success.
