A single level in Super Mario Bros. Wonder provides a transformative perspective on the plight of the average Goomba. Philosopher Thomas Hobbes once famously wrote in Leviathan that the life of man devoid of society and governance was "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short," and the same can be said of the Goomba, whose ranks have been largely cast out of the Mushroom Kingdom and seemingly other nations, such as Wonder's Flower Kingdom. Mario's quite literal squashing of the Goombas under the boot heel of the Mushroom Kingdom has long been the subject of jest, but a Wonder Flower gives a glimpse into the creatures' truly terrifying existence.
