In response to the increasing need for educational institutions to navigate the complexities of IT program funding, we hosted the “Maximizing Grant Success: Offices Hours with the U.S. Department of Labor Representative” webinar. The event was attended by educators, administrators, and industry professionals, and featured key insights from distinguished speakers including, Alan Rowland, Senior Vice President of CompTIA, Seth Robinson, Vice President, Industry Research of CompTIA, and Robert Owens, Director of Government Affairs at CompTIA.
With our key quest speaker, Nick Beadle, Senior Policy Advisor at the US Department of Labor, we discussed strategies for maximizing grant success for IT programs, the influence of an election year, and the importance of public-private partnerships. We also discussed the advantages of local workforce connections and how CompTIA can provide support throughout the funding process.
Approach to election years
Election years can bring a wave of uncertainty, and ultimately, a concern of the stability of current funding opportunities. Reflecting on serving under three administrations, Nick emphasized that while change is inevitable, many funding opportunities remain consistent year to year. He further advised to “be mindful of grants.gov, which is a great resource to see what we have out on the street and what we will have out on the street soon, just to know what’s coming, what to expect in some of these programs in terms of what will be around in the future.”
Importance of public-private partnerships
Public-private partnerships are vital in grant applications, particularly those focused on connecting workers to good jobs. The Department of Labor stresses these collaborations to ensure workforce training aligns with employer needs, transitioning from the traditional “train and pay” model. Nick explains, “the very important thing is to make sure that employers understand, especially from the Good Jobs’ perspective, as well as community organizations, what role they’re going to end up playing with it, and what the point of this money is, and what direction they’re going.”
Connecting with local workforce boards
Finding and connecting with your local workforce board and state workforce system is essential. Although operated by state and local officials, they are a direct link to our work and funding opportunities. There might also be an opportunity to braid local workforce funds, providing richer support to participants in your project. Additionally, “several of our grants require a connection to the workforce system in some way,” Nick explains.
