Off the heels of this week’s big DC movie news with director and DC Universe architect James Gunn announcing what’s in store for the rebooted universe, including a new Superman movie to kick things off, Gunn wanted to know one important thing: trunk or no trunks.
For most of his history, Superman has donned red trunks similar to that of a circus strongman. The look was updated with the removal of the trunks with the introduction of the New 52 in 2011, but eventually went back in a few years with DC Rebirth.

As for live-action, both have been applied. For the first Superman serial back in the late 1940s with actor Kirk Alyn, then the first Superman movie in 1951 with soon-to-be television’s first Superman, George Reeves had the trunks. Followed by Christopher Reeve and Dean Cain and Brandon Routh all donned the trunks.
