Denis Villeneuve has dropped out of directing Jake Gyllenhaal's HBO miniseries The Son. Based on the novel by Norwegian author Jo Nesbo, HBO officially greenlit the project in October 2020 with Gyllenhaal set to star and serve as executive producer under his Nine Stories Productions banner. Since the show’s original announcement, however, news regarding its progress has been scarce, as both Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal have been busy with other projects, including the former’s involvement with the Dune movies.
