The No. 5 Texas Longhorns and the No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils will face off in the second round of the College Football Playoffs (CFP). The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl matchup will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, Jan. 1, and is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT.
Texas is 12-2 overall and coming off a 38-24 win over the Clemson Tigers in the first round. Arizona State is 11-2 and earned the No. 4-seed after a 45-19 win over the Iowa State Cyclones in the Big 12 Conference Championship. That win, which was Arizona State’s sixth straight, earned the Sun Devils a bye in the first round of the CFP’s new 12-team playoff format.
The Longhorns were headed for SEC glory, and the No. 2-seed in all of the CFP, but those dreams were dashed by Georgia’s 22-19 victory in the conference championship. Both of the Longhorns’ losses this year came at the hands of those pesky Georgia Bulldogs.
The Sun Devils are coming in to this game as the underdogs, as they have all season. Arizona State didn’t grace the CFP’s Top 25 until Week 12, and star running back Cam Skattebo was not named as one of the four finalists for the Heisman Trophy, ultimately grabbing the fifth spot with 170 points and three first-place votes. But, they are also facing two problems: first, wide receiver Jordyn Tyson had season-ending surgery before the Big 12 championship. Second, star defensive back Shamari Simmons will be sidelined for the entire first half after a targeting penalty against Iowa State.
The betting odds currently favor the Longhorns.
