Leonardo DiCaprio's memorable role in Django Unchained was praiseworthy from the outset, but an on-set injury actually made his performance an iconic piece of Hollywood history. The 2012 Quentin Tarantino epic was a critical and commercial success, accruing over $420 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) and featured many of the director's greatest tropes (including historical revisionism). DiCaprio played the despotic enslaver Calvin Candie, and one of the character's biggest scenes saw the veteran actor sustain a real-life injury on camera. Although it could have been edited out of the final cut, the wounded actor never broke character and actually worked it into his performance.
