Despite making solid progress to getting off the ground, the Highlander reboot has gotten a later-than-expected release window. John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski has been attached to develop a new incarnation of the fantasy action franchise since 2016, with Henry Cavill signing on to lead the cast in early 2021, though saw its development delayed due to the filmmaker's focus on the Keanu Reeves-led action movies and Cavill's busy schedule with The Witcher and other projects. The reboot finally began gaining steam in October 2023 when Lionsgate acquired the rights to the project, with Cavill confirmed to play original Highlander hero Connor MacLeod.
