For the next Indiana Jones movie, Lucasfilm used an artificial intelligence program to de-age Harrison Ford and make him look many years younger. Ford himself has now commented on this, explaining that the AI program used actual, old footage of him for the new movie.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ford said, “They have this artificial intelligence program that can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns.” He went on to say (via Variety), “Because I did a bunch of movies for them, they have all this footage, including film that wasn’t printed. So they can mine it from where the light is coming from, from the expression.”
After mining the archives to find the right footage, the VFX team applies tracking markers to Ford’s face and he said the lines. “It’s fantastic,” Ford said.
