Getting through the Blind Auditions on season 25 of The Voice is enough of a boost. But on Monday night (March 11), New Orleans native and mega-Swiftie Zoe Levert got double-gifted when she got a last-minute chair turn from coach John Legend. Levert, 20, scored a slot on Team Legend with her confident take on Taylor Swift’s “Better Man (Taylor’s Version)” from the singer’s 2021 reboot of her Red album.
Dan + Shay loved the song selection — the song was the first single from Little Big Town’s eighth album, The Breaker, after Swift left it off 2012’s original Red album — with Legend joking that he thought it sounded like a Swift song. As long as she had her moment in the spotlight, Levert also revealed that she is a huge Dan + Shay fan, casually telling the duo that she’s getting married later this year.
In fact, she added, her fiancé Ryan was in the house to support her and their planned first dance song is the duo’s 2016 single “From the Ground Up.” Of course that got Dan + Shay out of their seats and onto the stage, where they serenaded the couple with the tune, joking “we have a pastor here if you guys just want to knock it out right now.”
The sweet surprise culminated in the couple slow dancing to the ballad, prompting Chance the Rapper to say that he was about to cry at the impromptu tender moment that included Shay Mooney dropping in the jokey ad lib line, “it’s okay that you didn’t pick us because we didn’t turn around you’re in good hand with John Legend.”
“It’s abundantly clear that if you’d had the choice to pick Dan + Shay you would have picked them,” Legend teased, with Levert saying “No! Team Legend all the way!”
