Warning: This article contains spoilers for Creed III.The strength of the Creed franchise has always been in the meaning behind its title, both a revered boxer's surname and a set of beliefs used to guide someone's actions, but Creed III forgets its own message halfway through the film. The movie begins with Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) cementing a legacy separate from his father Apollo Creed's, but a challenge from a childhood friend (Jonathan Majors) forces him out of retirement and into the ring. Their confrontation is deeply personal, partially because Donnie feels responsible for Dame going to prison for an altercation he instigated in his youth, and because Dame betrayed Donnie's kindness after he was released.
