English Version:

Brick by Brick: How Legos Can Advance Your Business Skills

Can playing with Lego bricks teach you to be a better business leader? The Lego Group certainly thinks so.

The company developed the Lego Serious Play program to help develop problem-solving skills, creativity and other critical thinking skills—all of which MSPs can experience firsthand during a workshop at the CompTIA Community – DACH meeting 7-8 November in Eppstein, Germany.

Many MSPs spend more time working in the business and not on the business, so it’s important also work on skill-building exercises across your organization. The CompTIA Community talked with Joachim Klühspies, who will lead the workshop in Eppstein about what to expect. Here is what he had to say:

What do Legos have to do with being a better leader?

Lego bricks and models give us the opportunity to make different aspects of leadership TANGIBLE. Using these models, different perspectives can be shared and also combined into a common idea of leadership.

What leadership qualities are taught in the workshop?

As a manager in today’s world, I am responsible for creating a favorable environment in which my highly qualified employees can realize good ideas. That’s why it’s less and less about defining a path and more about naming the goal; my employees may know an even better way. I accompany them on this path as a coach and mentor.

What if I think that I am already a good manager?

Then that’s wonderful – come to our workshop and share your knowledge and experience with everyone else and take away new perspectives and ideas.

How can MSPs apply what they have learned in their own company?

Ideally directly in their day-to-day work; it’s not about suddenly “turning everything inside out”. It starts with listening to my employees and valuing their ideas. The next step is to delegate more responsibility and to be able to hand things over. This may be unfamiliar at first, but over time it can be very liberating as you don’t always have to take care of everything.

What is the best starting point for becoming a better manager?

Having an open mindset, a so-called “growth mindset”. Being open to new ideas and simply trying things out. We live in a complex world – and we should say goodbye to these thoughts of “right” or “wrong”. We have to make countless decisions every day – and we can’t always know in advance what the consequences will be. By the way, this is called “error culture”.
