‘Air’ Is Now on Prime Video: Stream the Sports Drama for Free

After just over a month in theaters, Air landed on Prime Video on Friday (May 12). Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker and Jason Bateman star in the autobiographical sports drama that tells the story of how Nike courted Michael Jordan.

Apart from detailing Nike’s efforts in signing Jordan and creating the iconic Air Jordan 1, the movie shows how Jordan’s endorsement deal changed the game for athletes and for Nike. The film also does a good job of showcasing the role that Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan, played in securing the sneaker deal that helped her son become the world’s first billionaire athlete.

Affleck, who also directed the Amazon Studios film, portrays Nike founder Phil Knight. Damon and Bateman play former Nike executives Sonny Vaccaro and Rob Strasser, while Tucker Howard White, vice president of Jordan Brand.

Davis was personally selected by Jordan to play his mother.  “He said, ‘Well, it has to be Viola Davis,” Affleck recalled during the film’s SXSW premiere. “I said, ‘That’s like saying can I play basketball on your court, and you say, yeah if you get Michael Jordan.’ Viola Davis is the best actor I have ever seen.”

The Oscar-winning actress stars alongside her real-life husband, Julius Tennon, who plays Jordan’s late father James R. Jordan. Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, Mathew Mayer and Gustaf Skarsgård round out the cast.

Air shows the evolution of Nike and the Air Jordan brand, but audiences will only see archival clips of Jordan and glimpses of the character who plays him (Damian Delano Young). “Michael Jordan is so famous that I truly felt if we ever saw an actor playing [him] it would be hard to get the audience to suspend their disbelief, because, in my opinion, there’s no convincing anybody that someone who isn’t Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan. “We felt a more interesting way to tell the story would be for him to exist in the ether of the movie, ” Affleck shared last month, per The Hollywood Reporter.
