Though the original Lena Dunham creation is unique in its own right, plenty of shows like Girls have hilariously broached the topics of life, love, and hardship with a coming-of-adulthood twist. Premiering on HBO in 2012, Girls follows the lives of four twenty-somethings in New York City as they deal with the trials and tribulations of sudden freedom as they enter adulthood. Drawn mainly from the experiences of creator, Lena Dunham, Girls approached its ideas with a realistic vigor that made it endearing and cringe-inducing. The series managed to artistically capture the moment when many millennials came of age, and has come to define a segment of the 2010s.
